GEOPARK Sachsens Mitte

Germany is rich in geologically interesting areas. The area between Freiberg, Dippoldiswalde and Dresden offers such an immense variety of geological features that it has been fascinating scientists, locals and visitors for centuries. Designating this region as GEOPARK Sachsens Mitte (i.e. Geopark in the Centre of Saxony) is the ideal starting point for securing these values and making them accessible to all. After all, it is here, that geological history, nature, culture and environmental education come to life!

Rocks are everywhere on our planet. No wonder, since the crust of our earth is up to 70 kilometers thick and composed of various elements.

Some regions, however, are unique for their particular geological importance. In those areas GEOPARKS are established.

Geological rarities and the beauty of the landscape invite visitors to explore the past of planet earth and to better understand the interrelations between geology, nature and life.

There are currently 17 certified National GEOPARKs in Germany. GEOPARK Sachsens Mitte now is applying for the title.

Mission

We aim at giving the region around the center of Saxony and its characteristic geological and cultural heritage a boost, to use it creatively and develop it with a view to the future.

First and foremost, the focus is on raising awareness for a specific regional identity as well as for the beauty and singularity of this stretch of land called “home” to many. While aiming for certification, GEOPARK Sachsens Mitte adheres to the guiding principle of sustainability and its meaning for the region. The GEOPARK intends to make the geological treasures come to life and to care for their protection and sustainable exploration.
